What is an Electrical Panel?

Think of your electrical panel (often called a breaker panel, breaker box, or service panel) as the central nervous system of your home's electricity.

It receives the main power line from the local hydro utility and safely distributes that electricity into smaller paths (circuits) throughout your house to power your lights, outlets, and appliances. Inside the panel are safety switches called circuit breakers. If a circuit draws too much electricity, the breaker automatically flips "OFF" to cut the power, preventing your wires from overheating and catching fire.

Where is it Located and What Does it Look Like?

For most Ontario homes, your electrical panel is a gray metal box mounted on a wall in a utility area. You will typically find it in:

  • An unfinished section of the basement

  • A garage or workshop area

  • A dedicated utility closet near the furnace or water heater

When you open the metal door of the panel, you will see rows of black plastic switches. These are your circuit breakers, each labeled with a number corresponding to a specific room or major appliance in your house (e.g., "Kitchen Outlets," "Dryer"). At the very top or bottom, you will see one large double-switch called the Main Breaker, which shuts off power to the entire house in an emergency.

⚠️ Note for Older Homes: If opening your panel reveals rows of round, glass screw-in fuses instead of black switches, you have an outdated fuse box. These are significantly past their operational lifespan and are increasingly difficult to insure in Ontario.

Common Problems That Require an Electrician

Electrical panel issues are serious safety hazards. If you notice any of these warning signs, it’s time to call in a licensed electrical contractor:

  • Frequent Breaker Tripping: If turning on the microwave while the kettle is running constantly knocks out your power, your panel is overloaded.

  • Flickering or Dimming Lights: If your lights dip when your AC, furnace, or clothes dryer kicks on, your system is struggling to handle the sudden draw.

  • Hissing, Buzzing, or Crackling Sounds: A quiet hum is normal, but cracking or buzzing indicates a dangerous loose connection or electrical arcing.

  • Rust or Corrosion: Moisture in basements can cause panels to rust, destroying the integrity of your breakers.

  • Warm to the Touch or Burning Smells: If the panel door feels hot or smells like burning plastic, shut off power immediately and call us for emergency service.

  • Outdated/Dangerous Brands: If your home features a Federal Pioneer (Stab-Lok) panel or an old fuse box, many Ontario insurance companies will refuse coverage until it is replaced due to known failure risks.
